Congratulations to St Joseph's Healthcare and to Open Streets Hamilton!

Congratulations to St Joseph's Healthcare for being named the 2010 Smart Commute Hamilton Employer of the Year!  SJHH’s participation in Smart Commute Hamilton and the Hamilton TMA has been driven by Team EVA (Environmental Vision & Action), a grassroots greening program run by SJHH staff volunteers.  SJHH launched Carpool Zone in September 2009 with an initial participation of 4 active Carpool Zone users.  The number of active Carpool Zone users has increased by more than 5-fold to 21 in less than one year.  In SJHH’s inaugural participation in the 2010 Clean Air Commute, SJHH had 114 participants for a participation rate of 2.28% (5th highest in Ontario for organizations over 3000 employees).  SJHH’s 114 participants fully embraced the spirit of this event’s challenge to reduce pollutants by choosing cleaner, healthier and more sustainable modes of transportation.  SJHH averaged 7.41 kg of pollutant savings per employee, which was the highest in the Hamilton TMA.  10 bike parking spots which were previously unsecure have been converted to secure spots to increase utilization.  Overall SJHH has fully embraced the Smart Commute program and will continue to be one of the fastest growing and most active members of the Hamilton TMA.

Congratulations to OPEN STREETS HAMILTON for being named the 2010 Smart Commute Champion for the entire Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area!!  The Smart Commute Open Streets Hamilton Blue LogoChampion Award recognizes an individual or group who makes an outstanding contribution to the goals and vision of Smart Commute programs.  Open Streets Hamilton was recognized for being a collaborative team of community-focuses groups, NGOs, city departments and entertainers that came together to plan a series of events aimed a creating an urban park on James St North, closed to car traffic and open to cyclists and pedestrians.  Congratulations to all of the partner organizations involved in Open Streets Hamilton, and here's to the future of this great event!
